The Minerals Council of Australia has welcomed the passage of a bill in New South Wales that recognises the need for Australia to use its “world-leading” uranium assets for supporting global zero-emissions energy and highly skilled local jobs.

The council congratulated Libertarian Party legislative council member John Ruddick and the New South Wales legislative council which passed legislation last week to remove prohibitions in the state on uranium mining and nuclear energy.

The Uranium Mining and Nuclear Facilities (Prohibitions) Repeal Bill 2025 aims to repeal the original prohibitions from 1986, which should never have been implemented, the council said. The bill remains up for discussion in the New South Wales legislative assembly.
