Annual Outages Result In Slight Fall In Olkiluoto Production
The Olkiluoto-1 and -2 nuclear power plants in Finland.
The two-unit Olkiluoto nuclear power station in Finland produced 14.4 terrawatt hours of electricity in 2021, a fall from 2020, but still about one sixth of the total electricity consumption in Finland, owner and operator Teollisuuden Voima Oyj said.

The combined load factor of the two plants, both 890-MW boiling water reactor units, was 92.8%.

Olkiluoto-1 produced 7.4 TWh of electricity with a load factor of 95.1%. Olkiluoto-2 produced 7.0 TWh with a load factor of 90.4%.

Both plant units underwent a scheduled annual outage in spring, which affected production volumes.

The 14.4 TWh for 2021 was a drop from 14.6 TWh in 2020 when Olkiluoto-1 produced 7.31 TWh of electricity with a load factor of 93.7% and Olkiluoto-2 produced 7.28 TWh with a load factor of 93.3%. The combined load factor of both units was 93.5%.

TVO also said it had been preparing in 2021 for the startup of the Olkiluoto-3 EPR plant which took place in December. Grid connection is scheduled for the end of January and regular electricity production for the summer of 2022.

During the first half of the year, Olkiluoto-3 will produce electricity at varying power levels. With the 1,600-MW plant up and running, almost one third of Finland’s electricity will come from Olkiluoto.
