The Philippines’ lead agency in nuclear research and development has called for the passing of legislation that would create an independent nuclear regulatory body as the Southeast Asian country lays the foundations for the possible introduction of nuclear energy.
The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) said international standards prescribe a separate agency that will handle the regulation of all activities and facilities involving sources of ionising radiation.
The Comprehensive Nuclear and Radiation Safety Regulation Act of 2010 would meet these objectives, but the legislation, filed inn Congress in 200 and again in 2010, has not progressed.
