MoU could support deployment at scale
Swiss technology group ABB and Rolls-Royce SMR have signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on the deployment of Rolls-Royce SMR’s planned small modular reactor fleet, a statement said.
According to the statement, the work will examine how ABB’s automation, electrification, instrumentation and communications technologies could support scaling of the Rolls-Royce SMR programme.
The Rolls-Royce SMR is a 470-MW pressurised water reactor (PWR) that uses well understood technology that is already operating in hundreds of nuclear reactors.
Rolls-Royce SMR has begun site-specific design work for three planned units in North Wales and has also been selected for projects in the Czech Republic and Sweden.
In April, Rolls-Royce SMR and UK government body Great British Energy - Nuclear (GBE-N) signed a contract that enabled work to start on the delivery of three Rolls-Royce SMRs at the Gwyndod site, formerly known as Wylfa.
ABB said the cooperation will be developed through its UK operations, which are headquartered in Warrington.
