3 Oct (NucNet): The UK’s Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has the given go-ahead for the Wylfa-1 nuclear power plant in North Wales to continue operating until the end of December 2015.

Wylfa-1, the world’s last commercially operational Magnox reactor, was originally scheduled to end generation in 2010.

Magnox Ltd, the station’s licensee, said it submitted a periodic safety review (PSR), required every 10 years, for Wylfa-1 in September 2013. The PSR was reviewed by the ONR, which identified some “further items of work”, which the site is currently addressing, Wylfa said.

Magnox Ltd will now continue with its programme of transferring partially used fuel from Wylfa-2 to Wylfa-1, to bring the Magnox reactor programme to a “successful conclusion”.
