Westinghouse Wins Surry Nuclear Power Station Steam Generator Contract

US-based Westinghouse Electric Company has signed a contract with power company Dominion Energy to design, manufacture and deliver replacement steam generators for the of the twin-unit Surry nuclear power station in Virginia.

Westinghouse and Dominion will engineer and manufacture six steam generators to be delivered starting in 2028 with installation beginning in 2029.

The contract supports Dominion’s subsequent licence renewal programme to extend the long-term operation of Surry Units 1 and 2.

In 2021 the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved an application by Dominion Energy Virginia for a 20-year extension to the operating licences, allowing the two pressurised water reactors to operate for 80 years until 2052 and 2053 respectively.

Dominion said extending Surry’s operations is critical to the company meeting Virginia’s requirements for zero-carbon electricity by 2045.
