Westinghouse Electric Company and Detroit-based technology company Guardhat are launching a mobile digital system that can be used to give nuclear workers access to “remote experts” and limit the amount of time they spend onsite.

Westinghouse said in a statement that WEConnect is “the first connected worker solution for the nuclear energy industry”.

The WEConnect system provides utilities with the ability to limit the number of personnel onsite, while giving those who are onsite real-time access to remote experts and resources. This can help optimise the performance of onsite crews, Westinghouse said.

The system offers flexible packages so utilities can either build from scratch or improve an existing “digital ecosystem”. WEConnect includes features that help to improve workforce safety. It can also be connected to other digital devices and platforms, allowing for workforce and job management.

“We are pleased to join forces with Westinghouse to deliver ‘smart’ technology to the nuclear industry,” said Indranil RoyChoudhury, Guardhat’s executive vice-president of growth. “Our comprehensive safety monitoring and data analysis system offers enhanced features and benefits that can help plants improve safety while remaining cost-competitive.”

Westinghouse said it has already has piloted Guardhat’s connected worker technology at several utilities during scheduled refuelling outages.

Guardhat, founded in 2014, offers wearable technology that can monitor a user’s location, health and work environment.
