Westinghouse And Energoatom To Explore Potential Cooperation In Nuclear New-Build
US-based Westinghouse Electric Company and Ukraine’s state-owned nuclear operator Energoatom have agreed to take steps towards cooperation in potentially deploying new nuclear power units in Ukraine, a statement by Energoatom said.

Energoatom said its president Petro Kotin discussed the matter last week with Elias Gedeon, Westinghouse senior vice-president for commercial operations.

Westinghouse confirmed the meeting on its official LinkedIn page and said the two “met to discuss upcoming plans to implement new power units at Ukrainian nuclear power plant sites”.

“This is just the beginning of deepening Ukrainian-American cooperation in the field of nuclear energy”, Westinghouse said.

According to Energoatom, a joint working group will be set up to work on a “wide range of cooperation issues”, including preparation of “documents and measures” to deepen cooperation in nuclear energy between Ukraine and the US.

Westinghouse and Energoatom have signed a number of contracts over the past years for the supply of Westinghouse-made fuel for a large part of Ukraine’s reactor fleet.

Ukraine has 15 reactor units in commercial operation at four sites, all Russia-designed pressurised water reactor types. Two VVER-1000 PWRs units have been under construction at Khmelnitski-3 and -4 since the late 1980s, but progress has mostly stalled for years, because of financing and political issues.
