The government of Ontario has asked power company and nuclear plant owner Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to explore opportunities for new nuclear energy generation at a site in the municipality of Port Hope, after the municipality and Indigenous communities expressed their support.

The Ontario government said its request to OPG follows expressions of interest from the Municipality of Port Hope and the Williams Treaties First Nations in the possibility of building nuclear capacity at its site at Wesleyville, east of Toronto on Lake Ontario.

OPG said Wesleyville is one of three sites where it is exploring the potential for new generation with municipalities and Indigenous Nations.
