The Polish government will send an official letter this week to the European Commission to start the approval procedure for the country’s plans to finance its first three-unit nuclear power station project, undersecretary of state for strategic energy infrastructure Maciej Bando told a conference in Warsaw on Wednesday (11 September).
European Union regulations require countries to notify the Commission in order to ensure that state support for companies or industries does not distort competition within the bloc’s internal market.
The Commission oversees state aid measures with the aim of preventing unfair advantages that could harm free competition, but can grant exemptions under certain conditions and if member states provide sufficient grounds.
In November 2022, Warsaw chose US-based Westinghouse to supply the AP1000 pressurised water reactor technology for the construction of three reactor units near the villages of Lubiatowo and Kopalino, to the northwest of Gdansk on the Baltic coast in the province of Pomerania.
