The US has added Thailand to the list of destinations to which US companies are allowed to export nuclear technology and assistance, stepping up support for the deployment of US reactor technology overseas.
The Department of Energy (DOE) said in a statement these exports do not require advance DOE approval, though they are subject to reporting requirements. With the addition of Thailand, the total number of eligible destinations is 51.
The exports are controlled under the DOE’s regulation on assistance to foreign atomic energy activities. Under the regulation, energy secretary Chris Wright authorises specific activities that are not harmful, adverse, or hostile to the interest of the US, including assistance or transfers of technology.
