The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has formally accepted an application from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to build an advanced microreactor on its campus, beginning a detailed safety and environmental review process.

The NRC said that the application, first submitted on 31 March, proposes deployment of the Kronos micro modular reactor (MMR) developed by Nano Nuclear Energy.

According to the application, the reactor would use helium cooling and molten-salt-based heat transfer technology intended to improve operational safety and efficiency.
