The US should establish a new company called NuCorp to be led by power plant operators across the country to deal with the long-sidelined issue of nuclear waste management in the country, a group of bipartisan industry experts have recommended.

In a report called The Path Forward for Nuclear Waste in the US, published by the University of British Columbia’s School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, the authors said that with nuclear energy ready to make a comeback, finding a permanent solution for storing spent nuclear fuel was more important than ever.

“For the last 15 years the US has accomplished virtually nothing to solve the nagging question of how to permanently dispose of this waste,” the report said.
