The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and a local government authority have announced a new 20-year collaboration to advance fusion energy training and skills development.

The UKAEA’s collaboration with the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) will focus on developing and delivering fusion related skills, including apprenticeships and wider vocational training programmes, to support the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (Step) project – the UK’s first prototype fusion energy power plant that will be built on a former coal power station site in West Burton, Nottinghamshire.

A statement said the collaboration will provide crucial skills for Step and support a growing fusion industry across the region.
