17 Oct (NucNet): The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has asked the UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) to approve additional preparatory construction work for the UAE’s first nuclear power plant at Braka.

ENEC is asking for approval to carry out preparatory work for the pouring of initial safety concrete for units 1 and 2 at Braka.

Work also includes reinforcing steel and embedded piping as well as electrical conduits and electrical grounding material in preparation for pouring concrete for the reactor building.

ENEC said in a statement it cannot pour concrete for the permanent power block until it is granted a construction licence from FANR.

ENEC said it submitted its construction licence application for Braka units 1 and 2 on 27 December 2010.

South Korean reactor vendor Korea Electric Power Company (Kepco) won a tender contract in December 2009 to build the UAE’s first nuclear power plant.

A Kepco-led consortium will supply four APR-1400 reactors to the UAE.
The first two units, Braka-1 and Braka-2, are scheduled to be commissioned by 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Unit 3 is scheduled to be commissioned in 2019 and unit 4 in 2020.
