26 Jun (NucNet): The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) has published revised nuclear waste management fees that must be paid by every institution licensed to operate a nuclear facility in Sweden.
The five companies affected by the revised fees are licensed to operate nuclear facilities, but are not owners of a nuclear reactor. They are Westinghouse Electric, Vattenfall, Studsvik Nuclear, mining company Ranstad Mineral and Chalmers University of Technology, which offers courses in nuclear engineering and carries out nuclear research in collaboration with industry.
The fees range from the lowest of about 8,500 euros (11,500 US dollars) a year for Chalmers University of Technology to the highest of about 5.4 million euros a year for Vattenfall.
The funds provided by companies operating nuclear facilities in Sweden remain unchanged. These companies are Forsmark, OKG, Ringhals, Barsebäck and Studsvik Act.
The fees are paid annually to the country’s nuclear waste fund in the first month of each calendar year. They cover the cost of managing radioactive waste from nuclear activities.
There are 10 commercially operational nuclear reactors in Sweden at three sites – Forsmark, Oskarshamn and Ringhals.
