Sweden’s government has agreed on the details of a first financing package to build new nuclear power reactors with project developer Videberg Kraft, prime minister Ulf Kristersson said on 25 June.
“The state will also go in as an owner in this project,” Kristersson told reporters.
Kristersson gave no details of the financing package, which has to be approved by the European Commission.
State utility Vattenfall had already requested state financing to build three small modular reactors (SMRs) near the existing Ringhals nuclear site on the Värö peninsula, on Sweden’s west coast, with the first scheduled to begin commercial operation in the mid-2030s.
The government said in a statement it will take a 60% stake in Videberg Kraft, currently 80% owned by Vattenfall and 20% by the Industrikraft consortium of industrial companies. Vattenfall’s stake will drop to 20%, the government added.
