A “demanding” modernisation project has begun at the Mochovce nuclear power station in Slovakia that should increase production by 450 gigawatt-hours a year without higher fuel or personnel costs, station director Martin Mráz said.
On 15 August, Slovak nuclear operator Slovenské elektrárne began modernisation work by shutting down one of the two turbine generators at Mochovce-2 and beginning to dismantle the high-pressure and low-pressure parts of the turbine.
The work will result in an increase of about 7% in the electrical power of each unit at the two-unit station, from 471 MW to 500 MW. Combined, the output will increase from 942 to 1,000 MW.

Slovenské elektrárne said it will first increase the output of Mochovce-2, which will supply more electricity to the grid from November. In the spring of 2021, the same work will be completed at Mochovce-1.
Mochovce-1 and Mochovce-2 are Russia-designed VVER pressurised water reactor units. Mochovce-1 has been in commercial operation since 1998 and Mochovce-2 since 2000.
There are two further units under construction at the site.
