The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it could increase its oversight of the Vogtle nuclear project in Georgia after finding quality issues in the safety-related electrical cable raceway system at Unit 3.
Initial conclusions from the NRC’s June special inspection found that the station’s operator, Southern Nuclear Operation Company, did not adequately separate safety and non- safety-related cables for reactor coolant pumps and equipment designed to safely shut down the plant.
The NRC inspectors also found instances where the company did not identify and report construction quality issues related to the safety-related electrical raceway system and enter them into its corrective action programme.
