Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom has begun pouring first concrete for the foundation of the reactor building for the first of two new units at the Paks nuclear station in Hungary.
A ceremony on 5 February to mark the landmark was attended by International Atomic Energy Agency director-general Rafael Grossi, Hungary’s minister of foreign affairs and trade Péter Szijjártó, and Rosatom director-general Alexey Likhachev.
Rosatom said in a statement that the new Paks nuclear station will be the first in the European Union to use Russian VVER-1200 Generation III+ pressurised water reactor (PWR) units.
The start of first concrete pouring for the first new unit, Paks-5 (or Paks 2-1), means the plant is now officially under construction.
