22 Feb (NucNet): Russia’s nuclear construction company Atomstroyexport (ASE) and Turkish construction company Ozdogu have signed the first site preparation contract for the proposed Akkuyu nuclear power plant.
Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, of which Atomstroyexport is a subsidiary, said the contract includes excavation work at the site, on the Mediterranean coast in southern Turkey.
Russia and Turkey signed an intergovernmental agreement for cooperation on the construction and operation of a nuclear power plant at Akkuyu on 12 May 2010.
Rosatom said the plan is to build four 1,200-megawatt Generation III+ NPP-2006 pressurised water reactor units. The first unit should be in commercial operation in 2020, Rosatom said.
Rosatom said Akkuyu will be the first nuclear plant project implemented on BOO (build-own-operate) principles, with Russia designing, constructing, maintaining, operating and decommissioning the plant.
