Russia And Kazakhstan Finalise Agreement For Central Asian Country’s First Large-Scale Nuclear Power Station

Russia and Kazakhstan signed an agreement on Thursday to construct the central Asian country’s first large-scale commercial nuclear power station.

The deal was finalised during talks between Russia’s president Vladimir Putin and Kazakh president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the second day of the Russian leader’s state visit to Astana.

Tokayev thanked Putin for endorsing plans to build a nuclear power plant in his country. Kazakhstan said it expects Russia to finance 85% of the plant, which is projected to be commissioned around 2035-2036.

The facility is expected to have two Russian Generation III+ WER-1200 pressurised water reactor units.
