Russia supplying four PWRs for project on Mediterranean coast
The reactor pressure vessel (RPV) for Unit 4 of Turkey’s Akkuyu nuclear power station has been delivered to the construction site in Mersin province, project company Akkuyu Nuclear said.
The 320-tonne vessel, manufactured by Rosatom’s Atommash plant in Volgodonsk, was shipped by combined road and sea transport in early October and arrived at Akkuyu’s eastern cargo terminal on 12 November.
The shipment also included the equipment lock for Unit 3 and the pressuriser for Unit 4, Akkuyu Nuclear said.
The company chief executive Sergei Butskikh said delivery of the Unit 4 RPV means all four reactors for the plant have now arrived on site. He said the RPVs for Units 1, 2 and 3 have already been installed.
Russia is supplying four VVER-1200 pressurised water reactor units for Akkuyu, on the Mediterranean coast in the southern province of Mersin.
Construction of the four units started consecutively in 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022.
The first Akkuyu unit was initially expected to come online in 2023, but possible in-service dates have been pushed back to 2026.
