The baseline safety and security objectives for a new Generation III+ nuclear power plant being developed by France’s state energy company EDF based on its EPR and EPR2 units meet requirements and are “satisfactory”, regulator ASN said.

France’s nuclear regulator ASN said in an opinion on the safety options file for the EPR1200 reactor project, which EDF wants to export, that safety and security objectives meet the requirements of French regulations and the recommendations international organisations such as the Western European Nuclear Regulators’ Association.

The design of the EPR1200 plant is largely based on that of the EPR2 reactor, for which ASN issued an opinion in July 2019.

ASN said EDF had taken into account changes since July 2019, including stricter design, manufacturing and in-service monitoring requirements for certain equipment.
