Russian president Vladimir Putin will meet the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi in Russia’s second city Saint Petersburg on Tuesday (11 October), the Kremlin said.

Their meeting comes after repeated shelling of Ukraine’s Moscow-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station raised fears of an impending nuclear disaster.

Grossi condemned military attacks in areas that could affect the safety and security at the six-unit Zaporizhzhia nuclear station, the largest in Europe, including in the cities of Enerhodar and Zaporizhzhya.

“Almost every day now, there is shelling in the region where the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is located and where the plant workers and their families live,” Grossi said. “The shelling must stop, immediately. It is already having an impact on the nuclear safety and security situation at the plant.”
