Three Canadian provinces have agreed to collaborate on the development and deployment of small modular reactors to provide carbon-free, reliable energy that could replace coal plants and be used for off-grid power in remote areas.The project will see Ontario, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick work together on the development and deployment of “innovative, versatile and scalable” SMRs that will “unlock economic potential across Canada, including rural and remote regions”.“SMRs could generate clean and low-cost energy for both on-grid and off-grid communities, connect more remote and rural areas of our province, and benefit energy-intensive industries, including the mining and manufacturing sectors,” the governments of the provinces said in a joint statement.
