Ukraine’s president Vladimir Zelensky has ordered the setting up of a task force to develop a strategy for the development of commercial nuclear energy in the country, state nuclear operator Energoatom said.

Energoatom gave no details of the task force’s work or schedule, but said Mr Zelensky wanted to set “specific implementation dates”.

Mr Zelensky said during a visit to the Khmelnitski nuclear station that he would ask Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers to provide financing to complete construction of Units 3 and 4 at the facility.

Under an agreement between Energoatom and Atomstroyexport, a subsidiary of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, Russia was to secure the financing to develop, construct, and put into operation two new VVER-1000/392 reactor units, Khmelnitski-3 and -4.
