The European Parliament has voted in favour of legislation to bolster Europe's manufacturing output in technologies needed for decarbonisation – including both nuclear fission and fusion.
The Net-Zero Industry Act aims to encourage more technology like nuclear, solar cells and wind turbines to be made in the EU.
Lawmakers welcomed the result as a clear signal of Europe’s intent to keep pace with global powers like the US and China, which are investing heavily in green technology.
According to Politico, the US has already approved $369bn (€338bn) in incentives for climate-friendly investments and local manufacturing, while China has long sought to dominate green technology through robust state support.
The act sets a target for Europe to produce 40% of its annual deployment needs in net-zero technologies by 2030 and to capture 25% of the global market value for these technologies.
