The UK’s Office for Nuclear Regulation has officially become the country’s nuclear safeguards regulator, in charge of the domestic safeguards regime and operating the state system of accountancy and control of nuclear materials.

Following the end of the transition period as laid out in the Brexit withdrawal agreement, the ONR assumed its responsibilities at 23:00 on 31 December 2020.

“This has been a major project for ONR, setting up a new team, new systems and new processes,” a statement said.
