US-based advanced nuclear technology company Oklo has announced plans to design, build and operate a spent nuclear fuel recycling facility in Tennessee as the first phase of an advanced fuel centre.

The company said investment in the planned facility will total up to $1.68bn (€1.43bn).

The initial investment will be for the construction of a facility to recycle used nuclear fuel from existing nuclear plants into fuel for fast reactors like Oklo’s Aurora powerhouse. Oklo said the facility will be the first of its kind in the US.

Oklo is also exploring opportunities with the federal power company Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to recycle the utility’s used fuel at the new facility.
