Romanian state-owned nuclear company Nuclearelectrica and private Romanian firm Nova Power & Gas SRL have established a project company called Ropower Nuclear to develop small modular reactors (SMR) in Romania at the site of the former coal-fired power plant in Doicesti, Dambovita county.
The new company is aiming to deploy US-based NuScale’s Voygr-6 (462 MW) design at the site, north of Bucharest in south-central Romania.
The SMR – which could become the first SMR built in Europe – will be supplemented by renewable sources of around 80 MW, which means the new power complex would exceed the capacity of the former Doicesti power plant.
RoPower Nuclear said it will generate more than 200 permanent jobs at the power plant along with 1,500 construction jobs and 2,300 production jobs.
