Japanese nuclear regulators have formally adopted a screening report concluding that Unit 2 at the Shimane nuclear power station in western Japan meets the country’s new safety standards for a restart.

The 789-MW boiling water reactor unit in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, operated by Chugoku Electric Power Company, is the 17th reactor in the country that has passed Nuclear Regulation Authority safety screenings introduced following the March 2011 Fukushima-Daiichi disaster. It began commercial operation in 1989.
