Ukraine’s State nuclear operator Energoatom has held a meeting of its crisis centre following Russian military action on Friday and said a number of cyberattacks have been repulsed, without giving details of when or where they happened.

Energoatom said the meeting was attended by energy minister Herman Galushchenko and Energoatom head Petro Kotin.

Mr Galushchenko told the meeting that the most important task of all energy workers is to ensure the sustainable operation of the energy system, all energy facilities and nuclear power plants.

“No less important is cybersecurity in general, and critical infrastructure, which includes all nuclear power plants, in particular,” he said. “However, not a single massive cyberattack succeeded – all were repulsed,” he added.

Ukraine has 15 commercial nuclear power reactors at four nuclear sites: Khmelnitski, Rovno, South Ukraine and Zaporozhye. They provide about 51% of the nation’s electricity share.

Energoatom said they are all are operating normally. “There are no violations of the limits and conditions of safe operation,” it said.

Energoatom said additional security had been deployed at nuclear plants there was “an enhanced level of protection of nuclear installations and nuclear materials” along with measures to prevent the occurrence of crisis and emergency situations.
