Laurentis Energy Partners, a subsidiary of Canada-based Ontario Power Generation, will collaborate with Romania’s nuclear energy utility Nuclearelectrica on the production of life-saving medical radioisotopes at the Cernavodă nuclear power station and to explore the possibility of heavy water production in Romania.

The announcement follows Canada’s recent announcement of CAD3bn (€2bn, $2.2bn) in export financing to Romania’s state nuclear operator Nuclearelectrica towards the construction of two Canada-supplied Candu pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWR) at Cernavodă. PHWRs use heavy water as its coolant and neutron moderator.

The MOU enables Nuclearelectrica and Laurentis to work together on opportunities in a number of areas, including radioisotope production at Nuclearelectrica’s Candu nuclear reactor units.
