Ukraine is considering ambitious plans to build up to 20 small modular reactors to replace thermal generation units destroyed during the war with Russia, energy minister Herman Haluschenko said.
“This is the best option to replace thermal generation,” Haluschenko was quoted as saying by Ukrainian and Russian media sources. “We will move towards the green transition on SMR technology, this is the best technology.”
Ukraine has already said it is planning for new nuclear power plants as it seeks to replace existing units that began operation in the 1980s and will be in service for a maximum of 60 years.
