Earlier today, Krško operator NEK announced the automatic shutdown of the plant after an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale hit central Croatia, about 100 km southeast of the Slovenian site, at 12:19 local time.
Slovenia’s Nuclear Safety Administration confirmed in a statement that the Krško nuclear station is in a safe state, with staff on site having carried out procedures considered “normal” under a shutdown event. Inspections of all systems and equipment are now being conducted, the regulator said.
According to the statement, the effects of the Croatia earthquake were felt all over Slovenia, and were considered to be of the 5th degree on the European macroseismic scale.
Krško has a single, two-loop pressurised water reactor with a power output of 688 MW. It began commercial operation in January 1983.
