UK prime minister Keir Starmer has announced plans to establish a taskforce that will be independent of the country’s existing regulator, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), but nonetheless seek to streamline nuclear regulation in the country.

In a statement on 10 April, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DENSZ), the UK government department that is in charge of nuclear energy policy in the UK, said the “independent taskforce will identify how nuclear regulation can better incentivise investment to deliver new projects more quickly and cost efficiently”.

This will be done through efforts to “simplify processes and reduce duplication, all whilst upholding high [regulatory] safety and security standards,” the DESNZ added.
