As part of its plans to lower greenhouse gas emissions and generate 20% of its electricity from non-fossil sources by 2030, China wants to increase its share of nuclear power to as much as 10% over the next decade, Kejian Zhang, chairman of the China Atomic Energy Authority, said.Mr Zhang told an International Atomic Energy Agency conference in Vienna that China is scaling up its low-carbon energy capacity via sources including solar, wind and hydroelectric, with plans to have at least 53 GW of installed nuclear power capacity by 2020. Nuclear power provides about 4% of China’s electricity. The country has 48 nuclear power units in commercial operation and nine under construction.
