The nuclear generation fleet in the G7 has prevented at least 50 gigatonnes of CO2 over the past 50 years, equivalent to over 1.5 years of global energy-related emissions.
The share of nuclear power in electricity generation in G7 countries could fall from 19% in 2020 to 12% in 2050 against a background of rapidly rising electricity demand and the retirement of many reactors, the International Energy Agency has said in a report on achieving net zero.
