Agency team also called for updated cost assessments and increased transparency
Germany is safely managing its radioactive waste and spent fuel but should improve the monitoring of the implementation of its radioactive waste and spent fuel management programme and update cost estimates for removing legacy waste from the Asse II mine, the International Atomic Energy Agency said. An Integrated Review Service for Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management, Decommissioning and Remediation (Artemis) team from the Vienna-based agency also said Germany could improve transparency in some reporting and regulatory processes. The team, which concluded a two-week mission to Germany on 4 October, said Germany has a mature legal and regulatory framework for the safety of spent fuel and radioactive waste management.
