Hungary is to sign a nuclear cooperation agreement with Washington including the purchase of US nuclear fuel and a deal on plans to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) in the European country.

The deal will be signed when US president Donald Trump meets Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban on 7 November. The two leaders are expected to discuss Hungarian dependence on Russian oil and its use of Russian nuclear fuel.

“We will sign an important intergovernmental agreement on nuclear energy cooperation with my fellow foreign minister, Marco Rubio,” said Hungarian foreign minister Péter Szijjártó, adding he had told International Atomic Energy Agency director-general Rafael Grossi about the upcoming discussions.
