Hot testing has been completed at Unit 1 of the first nuclear power plant to be constructed in Belarus, Russian state nuclear corporation and plant supplier Rosatom announced.

Hot testing takes place over a number of weeks and consists of tests performed on major systems to check their performance under normal operational conditions, without any nuclear fuel assemblies in the reactor.

According to Rosatom, hot testing at Belarusian-1 began on 11 December 2019 and involved 242 tests. Systems were tested at a pressure in the primary circuit of 160kg/square centimetre and at a temperature of more than 280C.

The next stage in preparing the unit for physical start-up includes an audit of the main and auxiliary equipment of the primary and secondary circuits, which is scheduled to be completed in June.

There are two 1,109-MW Russian VVER-1200 reactor units under construction at the Belarusian site near the town of Ostrovets close to the border with Lithuania.

Construction of Unit 1 began in November 2013 and of Unit 2 in April 2014.
