Global nuclear electrical generating capacity could increase by 82% to 715 GW by 2050, although under a low case scenario will fall by 7% to 392 GW, the International Atomic Energy Agency said in a new report.

The 40th edition of Energy, Electricity and Nuclear Power Estimates for the Period up to 2050 warned, however, that “immediate and concerted action” is required for nuclear power to reach a share of 11% in electricity production by 2050, as seen in the high case scenario.

“The involvement of a broad range of actors including policymakers, the nuclear industry and international organisations, along with active engagement with the public, is necessary,” the report said.
