Close to 15 years after the country decided to shut down its nuclear power plants, the German nuclear industry association (KernD) has joined Brussels-based nucleareurope as a full member.

“The growing membership of nucleareurope is a testament to the strong momentum around nuclear energy across European member states,” said nucleareurope director-general Emmanuel Brutin. “Nuclear is a truly European net-zero value chain, and it is very positive to see the European industry coming together to strengthen cooperation and make its voice heard across the EU”.

Germany’s last three nuclear power plants – Isar-2, Neckarwestheim-2 and Emsland – were permanently shut down in April 2023, making good on the country’s delayed nuclear phaseout even amid Europe’s energy crisis caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine.
