GEH Says It Is Not Submitting Reactor Bid, But Is Pursuing Steam Turbine Project
Reports in Bulgaria that GE Hitachi (GEH) is submitting an application to provide reactor technology for the planned Belene nuclear project are incorrect.

The company told NucNet that GE Hitachi is not involved in the bid process, but GE is involved through its Steam Power business which is pursuing the project as an equipment supplier with its half speed Arabelle steam turbine technology.

Arabelle turbines have up to 1,770 MW of power output and are the largest turbines in operation worldwide for the past 18 years.

In 2008, Bulgaria ordered two Russian VVER-1000 pressurised water reactor units for Belene, but the project was cancelled in 2012 because of financial and political considerations.

In June 2018, the government formally revived the project following a vote in parliament.

A 2016 arbitration settlement awarded Bulgaria most of the nuclear equipment already produced by Russia for Belene under the 2008 agreement.
