Turkey is planning to begin trial production at its first commercial nuclear power plant in 2025 with the unit now more than 90% complete, an official said, according to local press reports.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said the plant supplier, Russia’s state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom, is on schedule to load the first fuel at Akkuyu-1 next year.

“This is one of the significant milestones in Turkey’s nuclear history,” Bayraktar told a ceremony marking the completion of the turbine facility for the plant.

Rosatom is supplying four of its Generation III+ VVER-1200 pressurise water reactor units for the Akkuyu facility, on the country’s southern Mediterranean coast.
