A final decision on the construction of a new nuclear power unit at Slovenia’s existing Krško nuclear power station will be subjected to a national referendum before the actual project kicks off, Slovenia’s ambassador to Bulgaria told a conference today.

Nataša Bergelj told the Bulgarian Atomic Forum (Bulatom) annual conference in Varna that the Slovenian government has committed to decide by 2027 at the latest on whether there will be a second nuclear unit at Krško.

Bergelj said that in the event of a positive decision by the government, the Balkan country’s citizens will be asked to give their final say in a nationwide referendum on the new-build plans.
