One day after the Illinois state senate adjourned without voting on an energy package that would have included nuclear power plant subsidies, Exelon filed a notice with grid operator PJM Interconnection of its intention to deactivate the two reactors at its Byron nuclear power station.

According to the American Nuclear Society, the 16 June submission say Exelon plans to shut down Byron-1 and -2 on 14 September 2021 and 16 September 2021 respectively.

The move came one day after the Illinois state senate adjourned without reaching an agreement on a comprehensive energy package that would have provided nearly $700m to keep Byron’s reactors, as well as Exelon’s Dresden and Braidwood nuclear power stations, in operation.
