GRAYOAK Nuclear, a European provider of generative AI for the nuclear sector, has confirmed that its platform is now in active use at every Swiss nuclear power plant, developed in close partnership with operator Axpo.
Twelve months after go-live, the system – known internally as “Lise” – processes more than 1,800 messages per day and has indexed over 550,000 documents spanning more than 50 years of operational history, with an 80% active-user rate among staff
The platform was built specifically for nuclear operations, addressing the strict security and data-sovereignty requirements that have historically kept off-the-shelf AI tools out of reach – a model GRAYOAK Nuclear says was essential to winning trust in a heavily regulated industry.
“With GRAYOAK, we found a partner who truly understands both the complexity of the nuclear domain and the potential of GenAI,” said Alejandro Ojeda, Head of Digital and Innovation Nuclear at Axpo.
“Together, we moved from concept to a production-ready platform in record time – without compromising on security or regulatory compliance.”
Building on that foundation – indexing existing document systems without replacing them – GRAYOAK Nuclear has since built and extended nuclear-specific apps, with 20+ further dedicated apps and agents in development.
Behind much of this work lies a shared industry concern: as experienced staff retire, decades of operational knowledge risk leaving with them. By making more than 50 years of documented operating experience searchable and accessible to new and existing staff alike, GRAYOAK Nuclear says the platform helps plants retain institutional knowledge even as their workforce changes.
GRAYOAK Nuclear says the next phase of development extends beyond day-to-day operations to cover a plant's entire lifecycle – from planning and construction through operation to decommissioning, dismantling and disposal.
For GRAYOAK Nuclear’s leadership, the deployment reflects a broader argument about how nuclear operators should approach AI.
Florian Soter, CEO of GRAYOAK Nuclear, said: “A nuclear power plant runs through decades of distinct lifecycle phases – planning, construction, operation, decommissioning, dismantling, disposal.
"We have already implemented use cases for different phases, with more to follow in the coming months. Some cover use cases in the entire lifecycle, while others target a single phase, so the companies responsible for each phase can get the most value from them."
