Akademik Lomonosov is ‘a cutting-edge example of how SMRs can be deployed’
Europe is failing to keep pace with rivals like Russia and China when it comes to producing clean nuclear power because of fear-mongering and anti-nuclear pressure, Samuele Furfari, professor of the geopolitics of energy at the Université libre de Bruxelles, said in an article in European CEO.Mr Furfari said that by succumbing to pressure from anti-nuclear groups, western policymakers have failed to keep pace with Russia and China. Russia’s Rosatom, for example, is already a global leader in marketing nuclear energy to emerging economies, and has more than 100 projects in countries including India, China and Belarus. He said the western media has failed to recognise the importance of the Akademik Lomonosov, Russia’s first floating nuclear power plant, which arrived in September in the remote town of Pevek in the country’s Siberian Arctic region.
